AJ Granger is one of the few athletes to have earned state championships in basketball and track and play on a national championship team. He helped Michigan State capture the 2000 NCAA Division I basketball crown as a co-captain, scholar athlete and most improved player. During his 3-year career at MSU, the Spartans won three Big Ten regular season and two Big 10 tournament titles and an NCAA Final Four appearance in 1999.
He had tryouts with three NBA teams before playing professionally in Greece, Italy and Germany. As a standout at Liberty-Benton, he helped the Eagles go 27-0 and win the 1995 Division IV state basketball championship, win four straight Blanchard Valley Conference titles and two district crowns. He was the Ohio North-South game MVP and the coach’s association Division IV Player of the Year as well as a McDonald’s All-American nominee.
In track, Granger captured the 1996 Division III discus title after placing fifth in 1994 and third in 1995 when the Eagles won the D-III state crown. He was fourth at state in the shot put in 1996 and the Liberty-Benton, BVC and district record holder (187 feet) in the discus.
