Bill Banning is the only coach to guide a Blanchard Valley Conference football team to a state championship, having achieved the crowning success in 1983. His 1983 McComb squad marched to the Division V state title in grand style, compiling a 13-0 record and not allowing a touchdown in three post-season games. Besides the state championship season, Banning coached McComb teams into the state playoffs in 1982, 1984, 1985, and 1993. Banning compiled a 157-67-2 overall record at McComb and had 18 consecutive winning seasons during his 22-year tenure as the Panthers’ head coach. His McComb teams captured nine Blanchard Valley Conference championships, including five straight from 1982 to 1986. He was named BVC Coach of the Year seven times and was chosen as the 1982 Associated Press Northwest Ohio Coach of the Year. Banning’s head coaching career spanned 30 years after taking the reins of the gridiron program at Loudonville in 1967. Overall, he coached for 32 seasons before retiring in 1997 from McComb.
