Bill Garnes starred in basketball and track at Findlay High from 1947-48 until 1950-51, earning four letters in each sport. He played on the 1948 Findlay High state championship basketball team as a freshman, scoring six points. He earned all-Ohio honorable mention honors as a sophomore; was a second team pick as a junior and a first-team selection after his senior year. Garnes, who excelled both offensively and defensively, was a three-time all-Buckeye Conference honoree. Findlay High had an unbelievable record of 87-5 during his four seasons of competition. As a track performer, Garnes was a three-year state meet qualifier, finishing second in the 440 as a junior. He held several FHS records for over 35 years. Garnes played one year of basketball at Central State College, then enlisted in the Air Force and played for Sampson Air Force Base in New York, touring throughout the world with the team. He was offered a tryout with the Rochester Royals. He served as a Baltimore Orioles scout as well. He later became an umpire, and he was revered by the hundreds of youngsters to whom he devoted so much of his life to his involvement in Findlay Youth Baseball and the midget football program.
