Bill Jones compiled a 64-36-1 record as Findlay High’s football coach during a 10-year (1973-82) career. Jones also had coaching stints at Bellefontaine, Miami East, Zanesville, Elyria and Rocky River. Jones’ FHS tenure, which also included four years as an assistant, is the longest of any Findlay coach since the school began football in 1898. His 1975 Blue & Gold squad was 10-0 during the regular season and became the first Findlay High squad to enter the state grid playoffs, falling to eventual champion Cincinnati Moeller. That same season Findlay won its first-ever Buckeye Conference title, while Jones coached the Trojans to a share of the 1977 crown. His FHS teams won seven or more games in seven of his 10 seasons, and his squads posted 43 conference wins compared to 34 victories the previous 17 seasons. Jones was honored as Buckeye Conference and AP Northwest District Coach of the Year in 1976 and coached the North squad to victory in the annual Ohio North-South All-Star encounter. During his collegiate days as a quarterback at Taylor (Ind.) University, Jones broke nearly all of the school’s passing records.
