Cal Dietz

Cal Dietz was a three-time national champion at the University of Findlay—twice in football and once in wrestling—and is now the head strength and conditioning coach for Olympic sports at the University of Minnesota. The Shelby native was a two-time All-American in football at Findlay, where he was a member of NAIA national title-winning teams in 1995 and 1997. He also helped the wrestling team win a national championship in 1995. Dietz received a bachelor’s degree in physical education from the university and became its strength coordinator. Overseeing 26 men’s and women’s sports, he also coordinated the fitness center, taught strength and conditioning classes and was an assistant football coach, working with the offensive line. Moving on to Minnesota, Dietz earned a master’s degree in kinesiology from the university in 2000. Becoming a staff member there, he helped found and has chaired the Sport Biomechanics Interest Group, aimed at exploring the physiological and biomechanical aspects of advanced human performance. He has also been a member of the Gender Equity Committee at Minnesota and has represented the university on a Big Ten committee to develop a policy for performance-enhancing substances.
