Chuck Merzbacher is the most accomplished tennis player in Findlay High history and has gone on to establish a strong tradition as the women’s tennis coach at Ohio State University. After a stellar prep career and a 1983 Ohio High School state title, Merzbacher was the 1984 USTA national amateur clay court champion; became the all-time career victories leader (137 wins) and a 3-time Big Ten selection at Minnesota; and was ranked as high as No. 354 in singles and No.335 in doubles, playing in both the Australian Open and the Wimbledon qualifier in 1989 as a professional. Merzbacher began his coaching career at Northern Illinois in 1989, guided Kansas (1992-96) to four straight Big Eight women’s tennis championships and had an 83-29 overall record at the school. He moved onto Ohio State in 1996-97 and has led OSU to five straight NCAA tournament appearances, a first in the program’s history. Merzbacher was named the 1999 Big Ten Coach of the Year, his 1999-2000 squad claimed the first regular-season Big Ten title in OSU history, and in 2001-2002 OSU won a school-record 19 matches overall and 14 consecutive matches at home.
