Cindy Kloepfer Walerius was the first girls’ basketball player in Hancock County to score 1,000 points in a career. That success led the versatile performer to a second-team all-Ohio selection by both United Press International and the Associated Press as a senior at Vanlue. In basketball, she started 82 consecutive varsity games, helping the Wildcats win two Blanchard Valley Conference titles and she became the first girls player to earn BVC Player of the Year honors in basketball. She was a three-time all-BVC pick and a 3-time team MVP, serving as team captain as a junior and senior. She recorded 143 assists in her career, finished with 1,139 points and had a 39-point game during her career. In volleyball, Walerius was a team captain and honorable mention all-BVC as a senior. She has stayed involved in athletics, coaching basketball at the junior high and junior varsity level at New Riegel and Liberty-Benton for 22 years.
