David Gerber

David Gerber set a standard of excellence as head football, basketball and track coach at Findlay’s Central Junior High School from 1964-77. His football teams went 51-16-5 over 12 years, winning the city championship eight times. Six of those teams were undefeated; from 1969-74, the Spartans compiled a 26-game unbeaten streak. Gerber’s basketball teams also won eight city titles—including six in a row from 1971-76—and compiled a 111-58 record in 13 seasons. He also coached two city track championship teams, and more than a dozen of his Central athletes went on to earn college athletic scholarships. From 1957-64, he taught and coached at Donnell Junior High. Donnell won the city football title each year, with Gerber serving as an assistant coach to Gene Jones, and Gerber coached the eighth-grade basketball team to four city crowns. A graduate of Bluffton High School—where he earned seven varsity sports letters—and Bowling Green State University, Gerber also officiated high school basketball for 15 years. In 1974, he received an Ohio High School Athletic Association award for his work as an official. He has been active in the community as well, including 10 years as the city playgrounds director and service with the American Red Cross, First Lutheran Church and the Findlay Garden Club.
