Dean Pees is regarded as one of the top defensive coordinators in the history of the NFL. In the past 30 years, he ranks 3rd in percentage of top 10 finishes in total defense, and his 2017 Baltimore Ravens led the league in interceptions and total take-aways while recording 3 regular-season shutouts (a first for any NFL team in the previous 25 seasons). After 6 years teaching and coaching at Elmwood High School, coach Pees became the defensive coordinator for the University of Findlay in 1979. In four years, the Oilers posted 9 shutouts and won the 1979 NAIA National Championship. Following coaching stints at Miami (Ohio), the Naval Academy, Toledo, Notre Dame, Michigan State and Kent State, Dean became the defensive coordinator of the New England Patriots, where he was part of seven division or conference championships. The Patriots won the 2004 Super Bowl over the Carolina Panthers. In 2010, he was hired by the Ravens as the linebacker coach. Two years later the Ravens won the Super Bowl over the San Francisco 49ers, making Dean one of just 8 defensive coordinators to win two Super Bowls with 2 different teams. After two seasons with the Tennessee Titans and two campaigns with the Atlanta Falcons, Dean retired in January of 2023. He and his wife, Melody, have 6 children and 13 grandchildren.
