Dick Beltz

Dick Beltz was and probably will forever be the greatest all-purpose triple-threat running back in the annals of Findlay High football. Beltz, the school’s all-time leading scorer, terrorized opponents by rushing for 3,000 yards and scoring 481 points from 1929 to 1931. He netted 58 points as a sophomore, 205 as a junior, and concluded his brilliant prep career with 218 points in helping the Trojans to back-to-back 9-1 seasons in 1930 and 1931. As an all-purpose performer, Beltz handled kickoffs, punting, PATs and was one of the school’s finest passers. He captained the 1931-32 FHS basketball team and the 1932 track team. While the pole vault was his specialty, he also excelled in the 100, 220, hurdles and the high jump. Beltz lettered for three years at Ohio State, graduating in 1936. He then had professional stints with the Pittsburgh Amerks and the Cleveland Rams. Beltz had coaching stints at Ohio State, Otterbein and with Navy service teams in the ‘40s, and coached football and basketball at Paulding, Hillsboro, Mt. Sterling and Bellefontaine.
