A schoolteacher for 43 years, Don Masters went from being a two-sport all-state athlete to being a state coach of the year in two states. Masters graduated from Moorestown High School (N.J.) in 1967, where he was named to the all-New Jersey football and baseball teams. After playing baseball at Findlay College (1968-72), he returned to his home state where he was the head football coach at Burlington Township, putting together two 10-0 seasons, 3 league titles and 2 South Jersey Regional Football Championships. In 1979, Don was named the New Jersey All-Division Football Coach of the Year. In 1980, Masters returned to Ohio to become the head football coach at Van Buren. In 21 seasons, he led the Black Knights to two 10-0 seasons, three BVC championships, three runner-up seasons and 116 overall victories. In 1988, Masters was named the Division IV Ohio Coach of the Year. Masters also developed a physical education program that enabled handicapped students to participate in regular PE classes, a program which has been modeled by many Ohio schools. Since 2001, Masters has continued to be active in sports, coaching football and baseball at Van Buren, McComb and Findlay High Schools. He has also provided color commentary for local football, basketball, baseball and hockey games.
