

Doug Freed was a standout quarterback at Arlington in the late 1970s and went on to play at Ball State University. As a high school senior in 1979, Freed was named Ohio Class A Back of the Year by The Associated Press after leading Arlington to a 10-0 record and the Blanchard Valley Conference title. He threw for nearly 1,000 yards and added 830 yards rushing while also earning all-state honors from United Press International—which ranked the Red Devils first in the state—and a spot in the Ohio North-South All-Star game. During his high school career, the three-year letterman threw for 2,053 yards and rushed for 2,100 yards as Arlington compiled a 24-6 mark. He also earned three letters in basketball and four in baseball. Also, a three-year letterman at Ball State, the Jenera native passed for 1,517 yards as a sophomore—when he ranked third in the Mid-American Conference in total offense and sixth in passing—and for 989 yards as a junior. In 1981, he earned MAC Offensive Player of the Week honors after throwing for 281 yards against McNeese State. A 1985 Ball State graduate, Freed lived in Tampa, Fla., prior to his death on Aug. 2, 2014. He is survived by sons Justin and Josh.
