Doug Martin

Van Buren’s Doug Martin, who had a highly successful Junior, high school and collegiate golfing career, reached the top of the golfing world as member of the PGA Tour. Martin advanced to the PGA in 1994 after $150,000 in earnings on the Nike Tour a year earlier. In 1991, Martin was 12th on the Ben Hogan Tour ($52,000 in earnings), won $77,000 on the 1992 PGA Tour, and added $27,000 on the 1993 PGA Tour. As an amateur, Martin was a member of the 1989 Walker Cup team and the No. 1-ranked golfer in the U.S., shooting a course record in capturing the Western Amateur in 1989. At Oklahoma, Martin was the NCAA runner-up and second in balloting for collegiate player of the year in 1989, was a 3-time NCAA All-American, the team’s MVP twice and a 4-time all-Big Eight golfer. This followed a high school career during which Martin captured the 1982 state Class “A” title and led the Black Knights to the team championship (1984) and third place finishes in 1981 & 1983. Playing the Junior ranks in 1984, Martin was the USGA medal and match-play champion, won the “Big I” Insurance Youth Classic, was Golf Digest’s No. 1-ranked Junior and an All-American by Golf Magazine. He was also Toledo District and two-time Findlay Area Golf Association Player of the Year.
