Fred Wilch

Fred Wilch was part of the Golden Era of Findlay High basketball (102 wins, 5 losses) and went onto become a successful coach, educator and official. The 1950 FHS graduate helped mold 19-3 and 20-1 records and win a pair of Buckeye League basketball titles his final two seasons. He was also a co-captain on the 1949 football team which was 8-1 and Buckeye League co-champs, giving the 1949-50 Trojans the school’s best football-basketball all-time record of 28-2. Wilch as a three-year starter in both football and basketball at Mt. Union, earning Ohio Conference all-Ohio honors as a junior and senior in football. The 1954 Mt. Union graduate, who earned his master’s degree from Toledo in 1962, began a 20-year career (231-170 record) as Fostoria Senior basketball coach in 1956, guiding the 1963-64 squad to a school best 19-2 record. He began officiating football in 1966 and ended a 30-year career at Fostoria in 1984. Wilch was inducted into the Mt. Union Hall of Fame in 1985 and served as District Representative for Aid Associations of Lutherans until retiring in 1996.
