George Simon

George Simon was one of the driving forces behind organizing the youth baseball program in Findlay. Simon, along with Bob Wortman, Jim Weakly, Wes Crabiel, Chet Fredericks, Chick Bowman and Tot Pressnell, formed Little League, Pony League and Colt League level programs in the mid-1950s. The pinnacle of Simon’s Colt League coaching career came in 1958 when the team won the district championship and participated in the Colt World Series in Ontario, Calif. Simon’s organized baseball began as a 14-year-old American Legion player and as a junior captain at Warren Harding High. After attending the Dizzy Dean/Roger Hornsby Baseball School in Hot Springs, Ark., Simon was offered a contract from the St. Louis Browns and chose to play for the Findlay Browns. He played four seasons with the Browns, who were managed by Grover Hartley and won the 130-game Ohio State League regular-season title in 1937. Simon also had a two-week tryout with the New York Giants in 1940 before concluding his playing career with the Old Dutch Brewery team.
