Gerald “Jerry” Wagner led the Arlington boys’ basketball team to three of its most successful seasons in school history five decades ago. Wagner coached the Red Devils to three Blanchard Valley Conference championships in 1967-68 and back-to-back 7-0 conference campaigns in 1969-1971. During the 1967-68 campaign, the Red Devils scored a school record 36 points in one quarter and 103 in a game. His 1969-70 squad averaged 69.5 points per game, had an 11-game winning streak and finished 17-3. A season later, Arlington posted a 16-4 record. He also started the Arlington baseball (1968) and golf (1972) programs and served as athletics director and assistant football coach. After starring in football, basketball and baseball at Rio Grande (1946-50), Wagner was a basketball assistant at Cadmus (1950-51) and Centerville (1951-53), won four basketball and two baseball titles at Coalton High School (1953-61) and won two basketball crowns and a sectional title at Fairfield Union (1961-65). Wagner was an all-league basketball player at Bidwell High School in 1943.
