Harold ‘Herk’ Wolfe, one of Findlay College’s all-time great basketball players, rewrote the Oilers’ record book in scoring and rebounding before graduating in 1954. Wolfe was the nation’s premier scorer with a 30.5 points per game average during the 1951-52 season, when he scored 671 points. In addition, he holds school scoring marks for a single game (61) and best average during a regular season campaign (31.2 points per game). With 1,733 points, Wolfe ranks in the top 10 in Findlay College all-time scoring. Wolfe scored 91 points as a freshman, 671 points as a sophomore, led NAIA players with 704 points as a junior and added 267 points in seven games as a senior. No Findlay College player has matched his 33 rebounds in a game, nor the 6-foot-7, 235-pound center’s 62.3 single-season field goal shooting percentage. Wolfe, who was inducted into the NAIA Helms Foundation Hall of Fame and received an award as the Distinguished Alumnus at Findlay College in 1965, also held the NAIA single-game field goal record of 25 until 1972. He was named to the Associated Press all-Ohio and All-American basketball teams during his playing career. He lettered three years in basketball and one year in track. Wolfe was inducted into the Findlay College Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 28, 1972. In 1994, he was named a Distinguished Associate of the school. A graduate of Staunton Military Academy, Staunton, Virginia, Wolfe led all Virginia prep players in scoring during the 1949 season.
