Harry Gonso

Findlay’s Harry Gonso, who was named the University of Indiana’s “Most Valuable Player” as a junior and senior, led the Big 10 champion Hoosiers to their only Rose Bowl appearance in 1968.

The 5-foot-11, 187-pound quarterback was a sophomore when Indiana (9-1 record) met the O.J. Simpson-led Southern California Trojans in the 54th annual Rose Bowl.

By the end of Gonso’s junior season, he already held Indiana’s career records for total offense and touchdown passes. He graduated in 1970, then went on to receive a law degree at Indiana. He resides in Indianapolis.

The talented football player epitomized the student-athlete. He was honored as a two-time all-Big 10 academic selection and also received academic all-America laurels.

It was as a runner that Gonso gained the most recognition. He rushed for over 1,000 yards in one season, including more than 40 rushing attempts in a game and finished his career with 152 points.
