Joy Woolley Zirger was one of Findlay’s most outstanding all-around female athletes, starring in ice hockey, soccer and softball. She was the first girl ever to play ice hockey in Findlay and Ohio and is the only girl to every play in the Northwest Hockey Conference. She earned two letters from the FHS boys’ team before moving to receiving a women’s hockey scholarship at Northeastern University. She advanced to the final cut for the first women’s Olympic hockey team in 1991. Woolley-Zirger became a three-time all-Ohio soccer player at Findlay High (1982-84). She was an all-American choice her senior season, earned three letters and became the school’s all-time goals (71) and assists (39) leader as well as establishing existing records for assists in a season (20), most goals and assist in a season (46) and career (110) and most goals in a game (5) and a season (29). The granddaughter of Forest “Tot” Pressnell began playing organized softball at age 9, turned a triple play as a 10-year-old and was all-league at Findlay High where she batted .333 for her career and lettered three years as a second baseman. She continues to serve as the boys’ junior varsity hockey coach and conducts summer power skating seminars.
