Larry Alter is a charter member of the Hancock Sports Hall of Fame and a 40-year sports editor of The Courier. In 1983, Alter joined Tom Jeffire, Dave Egbert and Dave Hanneman as original founders of the Hall of Fame, adding organizational and leadership skills that have served the committee well for 28 years, the last 22 years as the group’s secretary. Alter, a South Dakota native, joined The Courier staff in 1971, replacing Joe Lenhart as sports editor eight months later. During his writing career, Alter covered everything from high school sports to college athletics to sprint car racing and the American Legion World Series. His coverage of the University of Findlay football, basketball and baseball teams is especially noteworthy. Alter played an integral part in the athletic history of the school and was inducted into its Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995. Under Alter’s guidance, The Courier’s sports department became one of the most comprehensive in Ohio, placing second (2007 & 2010) and third (2005) in the Associated Pres Society of Ohio Division III Best Daily Section category, and second (2005) and third (2008 & 2009) in the Best Special Sports Section. Several football and basketball editions earned first-place honors for the Ohio Prep Sports Writers as well.
