Lawrence Mains

Lawrence “Punk” Mains, a former Marathon employee, enjoyed a 31-year (1929-1959) Fast Pitch softball career that included nearly 400 games. He performed on such teams as Ohio Oil, Findlay Merchants, First Lutheran and many others who added his talents for tournament play. During his career, Mains had two perfect games among 17 no-hitters. In a 7-day span in 1931, he threw three consecutive no-hitters in league play, striking out 34 of 45 batters he faced in two games and averaged 10 strikeouts during a 25-game season. Mains had 121 strikeouts in 15 games in pitching the Findlay Merchants to the Northwest Ohio championship in 1933. Then in 1944, in City League play, Mains hurled 5 shutouts in 6 games for the undefeated First Lutheran Church team, and he compiled a 23-2 record during the 1949 season. He led his team to city tournament championships eight times and was honored for his achievements during the 1947 season.
