Leonard Schmutte

Leonard Schmutte’s career as the Findlay Country Club pro spanned 38 years before his retirement in 1971. Schmutte began his services to golf at age 19 as an assistant pro at Fort Wayne, Ind. Country Club. Among his many successes were titles in the Indiana Open and Indiana PGA in 1926, the Pacific Coast Long Driving Championship (1928), the Dayton Gem City Open (1929), Toledo Open (1935) and two Sylvania Seniors Pro Championships (1956 & 1957). He was a member of the 1960 Ryder Cup team. Along the way he recorded his lowest course record of 63 at the Springbrook Country Club in 1927. Peg Kirk Bell became his favorite pupil, and with Schmutte’s expert instruction she went on to win the 1948 Ohio Women’s Championship. Schmutte had a flair for organizing major tournaments at FCC, including the 1945 Ohio Open; began the FCC “Dream Golf Shop” in 1953; was vice-president of the 1956 National PGA organization; was PGA Seniors president (1964-65); and played in a 1963 invitational in Scotland alongside Arnold Palmer, Nelson Burke and Ted Knoli. Schmutte was best known as an “outstanding teacher” of the game and for his ability to communicate the science and the art of golf.
