Louis C. Keller was a player, coach, manager, teacher and administrator with the Findlay school system from 1935-1972. In addition to being a Supervisor of Health and Physical Education, he became, at various times, a track and gymnastics coach, athletics director and assistant principal. In 1944, Keller was the faculty manager of Findlay’s only championship swim team. His summers were spent working for the city of Findlay as a supervisor of city playgrounds and was the first Riverside Park pool manager, holding the managerial position for over 20 years. He was heavily involved with YMCA and Red Cross Learn-to-Swim programs as well as water safety and lifesaving techniques. The Dayton native began his career at the Elyria YMCA from 1921-1923, while attending Oberlin College. He was primarily a championship swimmer, an outstanding gymnast and a good track and field performer. From 1923-1929, Keller was physical director at the Findlay YMCA, having a hand in developing learn-to-swim programs and Findlay softball leagues. He became Oberlin’s first swim coach in 1932 and served in that position for three years.
