Miriam (Boes) Khamis

Miriam (Boes) Khamis made her mark on the track for Arcadia, placing third at state in the 220-yard dash in 1976 and ’78, and as a member of 880-yard and mile relay teams that each won state titles in ’78 —both in state record times—and finished third in ’79, her senior year. She was a state qualifier three other times, placing sixth in the 220 as a senior. During her high school career, Khamis won 10 Blanchard Valley Conference titles in six events — three each in the 100, 220 and 440 dashes and as part of a relay team. She helped lead Arcadia to conference and district championships in 1978 and ’79. The 1984 Arcadia Hall of Fame inductee earned second-team all-BVC honors in basketball and honorable mention in volleyball, both as a senior. She also ranked third in her graduating class. She went on to play volleyball at then-Owens Technical College, graduating in 1982 with an associate degree in applied science, majoring in nursing. Khamis has worked as a registered nurse since then, including, since 1989, in the intensive care unit at Kaiser Permanente Orange County Anaheim Medical Center in California and the past two years in the perioperative unit. The Corona, Calif., resident has three children and is very active in ballroom dancing, tennis, hiking, road and mountain biking adventures.
