Norris Simpson is the first of two Findlay College graduates to have the distinction of being the coach of an undefeated team and winner of a state title in their first year of coaching. During a 32-year education career, Simpson was a teacher, coach and guidance counselor at Hicksville (1954) where he coached basketball, football and baseball and began the school’s golf team. He served as principal and athletic director at Sparta Highland for six years, and in 1968 became superintendent of Centerburg, serving in that capacity for 13 years. The 1949 FC graduate also distinguished himself as a member of numerous education and athletic organizations at the state, county and local level. He served five years as the “AA” representative to the Central District Athletic Board and was a two-year member of the OHSAA Board of Control. Simpson, who earned a master’s degree from Indiana University in 1954, was honored in 1968 as recipient of the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame award and was inducted into the FC Hall of Fame in 1979.
