Fostoria’s Tony Lucadello built a reputation as one of the best in the business in 40-plus years as a major league baseball scout. He was named ‘National Scout of the Year’ for 1986 by the American Amateur Baseball Congress and ‘Midwest Scout of the Year’ by the national Scout of the Year organization. All told, 49 of the players Lucadello signed over his career reached the major leagues. Most of the year he was on the road scouting for the Philadelphia Phillies, a position he had held since 1957. Before that, he scouted 12 years for the Chicago Cubs. He signed some of the biggest names in America’s national pastime, including three-time National League Most Valuable Player Mike Schmidt of Philadelphia. A Texas native, Lucadello moved to Chicago’s Roseland community in the last 1920s and honed his skills playing sandlot ball. He was a shortstop on the All-Nations team for three years. Lucadello later played semi-pro ball with the Fostoria Redbirds, a minor league affiliate of the St. Louis Browns. In 1976, Lucadello was inducted into the Roseland Sports Hall of Fame in Chicago.
