
Weldy Olson is one of only five players in U.S. hockey history to earn Olympic gold and silver medals, helping the U.S.capture its first-ever hockey gold medal in 1960 after a silver medal performance in 1956. The Michigan native was also captain of the first North American team to play in the USSR in 1958 and was the alternate captain of the 1960 Olympic squad. The team was inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame (1989) and U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame (2000) and was honored in 2002 with the Lester Patrick Award. Olson, the youngest of nine hockey playing brothers, advanced through the Michigan junior ranks and became the only player in Michigan State history to lead the team in goals for four seasons. He is a member of three Michigan hall of fames. After his playing days, Olson was instrumental in coaching, officiating and the advancement of amateur hockey. He was also a member of the 1976 U.S. Olympic Ice Hockey Committee.
